Pharmacy recruitment is very competitive, and unfortunately, your CV and cover letter are only a small part of your application. Your social media and online presence are also key aspects of your application.
Becoming your own brand ambassador
Nobody knows you better or will promote you more, than yourself! So it’s time to look at your personal brand.
Your brand audit
At a minimum Google yourself and see what it returns. Would you want a potential employer to see it? If the answer is no, it's time to delete old social media accounts, change visibility settings and update publicly facing bios. Make sure everything that is public, is ‘clean’ and non-controversial.
The next step is to identify your goals, interests, achievements, values and priorities. These will help you build your narrative and give you a consistent direction and messages to start building your brand.
Interview People
This may seem silly at first, but ask your friends and work colleagues what they think about you. It may surprise you with what they have to say and give you additional insight into your experience and skills, that you didn’t know or thought irrelevant.
Who’s your customer?
This may be a strange question. Who are you trying to influence? What are they interested in? What are they looking for?
By answering these questions, you can start to build a narrative around your brand that will resonate with your audience. Whether this be about the particular field you want to work in, an interest in a particular topic or a specialist skill set.
Building your brand
Start with your elevator pitch, a short introduction outlining your skills, passions and ambitions.
This will enable you to build a vocabulary that you can use on your CV, LinkedIn profile and any other public facing media. You should also ensure that your name and profile pictures are consistent and suitable. This will make it easier for recruiters to find your curated profiles online.
Finally, Grow your network
Whether you produce your own content, participate in groups, comment on posts, or are more passive on social media. Start thinking about which topics, groups and people you should follow and connect with.
What’s your personal brand?
Take some time to reflect on and polish your professional brand. Make sure it’s consistent and genuine, and don’t be false or overinflate yourself, as this will be seen through and can cause more harm than good.
